Despite goals from Josh Sargent, Jack Stacey and Emiliano Marcondes, Norwich City fell to a 5-3 defeat at home to Portsmouth on Friday afternoon in the Sky Bet Championship.

Johannes Hoff Thorup made four changes to his side that lost 2-1 to Burnley last week, bringing in George Long, Oscar Schwartau, Marcelino Núñez and Sargent.

City started the game lively, Jose Córdoba first to take a shot at goal, but the Panama international's effort was smothered and eventually collected by Portsmouth's Nicolas Schmid.

Long was forced to parry a shot from Adil Aouchiche after 10 minutes played, set up by former Canary Josh Murphy on the edge of the area.

The visitors then took the lead five minutes later, a looping cross from Matt Ritchie finding the head of Colby Bishop to nod home the opener.

City responded immediately though, Sargent finding the roof of the net after Borja Sainz battled to win a corner and a poorly cleared ball landed at the feet of the American.

Portsmouth came close to taking the lead again shortly after but were denied by a brilliant double save from Long.

A perfectly-placed cross from Schwartau was delivered into the path of Kellen Fisher waiting patiently in the box, but the right-back could only head the ball straight at Schmid.

The Canaries were then punished for the miss, as another cross from Murphy found Ritchie making his way goalward to slot home Portsmouth's second.

A penalty was then awarded for the visitors in injury time, Núñez penalised for a foul in the area. Bishop stepped up and converted from the spot.

The goal tied up the half and meant Portsmouth went in 3-1 ahead at the break.

Murphy and Bishop continued to link up and cause problems for the Canaries in the second half, the number nine netting his hat-trick on in the 51st minute.

Although the Canaries did pull one back through substitute Stacey just after the hour mark, Portsmouth continued to dominate the game and netted their fifth just minutes later, Regan Poole the goalscorer.

City then found a third after 90 minutes played, a looping header from Emiliano Marcondes evading Schmid in goal, but it wasn't enough for the Canaries to take any points away from the afternoon.

Norwich are next in action on Monday afternoon, travelling to The Den to face Millwall.
