Tony Roberts appointed head of goalkeeping

Norwich City are delighted to confirm the appointment of Tony Roberts as the club’s new head of goalkeeping.

Roberts, who will work alongside Johannes Hoff Thorup’s backroom staff, arrives following a period as goalkeeper coach at AC Milan.

As a player, Roberts accumulated over 600 professional appearances with the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Millwall and Dagenham & Redbridge. He transitioned into coaching at the end of his playing career.

He was goalkeeper coach at QPR, later moving on to Arsenal, where he worked under Arsene Wenger. Further spells at Swansea City, Chinese side Hebei China Fortune and Birmingham City followed, before he joined Wolves' coaching team.

In August 2023, Roberts moved to Italy to become goalkeeper coach for Serie A side AC Milan.

He also worked with the goalkeepers across the Wales national team setup for eight years.

Speaking to canaries.co.uk, Roberts said: “I’m really happy to join Johannes and his backroom staff. It’s a club that are starting with a new project and it’s something that really excites and appeals to me.

“I’ve heard a lot about Johannes and the coaching set-up here. He’s clearly a very knowledgeable and exciting young coach and I’m really looking forward to working with him.

“I’ve watched a lot of Norwich so far this season. It feels like an exciting group with a lot of talent and hopefully I can help and contribute to that.

“Ben (Knapper) is someone I’ve known since he walked through the door at Arsenal. He’s progressed through the game and I’m really excited by the project that he is building here. When he asked if I’d be interested in coming and joining him at Norwich I had no doubts.

“I know about the quality and size of Norwich as a club. It was a no-brainer for me and I can’t wait to get going.”

Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have Tony join us here at Norwich City. He is someone that I have known for a long time, having worked with him previously at Arsenal.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience at the very top levels of the game, in both club and international football. He will be a great asset for us, driving our goalkeeping programme forward club-wide.

“We’re very fortunate to secure someone of his calibre, and I’m looking forward to seeing the great impact he will inevitably make in our environment.”
