Norwich City’s Under-23s gave up a 3-1 lead against Newcastle United to lose 4-3 in the Premier League 2 Division Two on Monday night.
The Canaries went behind in the 20th minute, when Jay Turner-Cooke picked out the bottom right corner with a long range free-kick.
But Abu Kamara equalised for his 13th league goal of the season in 20 appearances, side-footing past Jake Turner after Lewis Shipley carried the ball forward positively and Flynn Clarke poked it into Kamara’s path.
Alan Neilson made one change at half-time, Under-18s captain Brad Hills replacing Sean Stewart, Shipley going across to left-back.
Immediately, City took the lead. Clarke sent Tony Springett racing down the right wing and Kamara connected with his cross. The ball fell nicely for Shae Hutchinson to pick out the bottom left corner.
Just four minutes later, Hutchinson netted his brace. Shipley’s quickly taken throw-in was collected by Saxon Earley, who cut back inside from the left wing and teed up Hutchinson to slot the ball calmly into the bottom right corner.
Norwich were punished for failing to play out from the back though, as Jaden Warner’s ball forward was intercepted, allowing Adam Wilson to finish from the left of the 18-yard box to reduce the deficit.
With just under 15 minutes remaining, Hills initially did well to carry City forward before his pass was cut out. Turner Cooke was able to run through on goal and find the bottom right corner to equalise.
In the 90th minute, Lucas De Bolle played the ball through to substitute Isaac Westendorf, who smashed it in off the near post to give the away side a 4-3 lead.
Taking his shirt off to celebrate, Westendorf was then shown a second yellow card, but Norwich couldn’t find a late equaliser against ten men.
After Fulham clinched the league title with five games to spare, Norwich remain second in Premier League 2, while Newcastle’s win has taken them up to fourth, inside the play-off places.
