Joe Duffy did well to latch onto a defensive mistake, but his effort was well saved by the goalkeeper.
Finley Welch almost set up Dan Ogwuru with a chip, with it bouncing safely through to the Dereham 'keeper.
Charlie Wilson rose to meet a Welch corner, but the centre-back was unable to guide it goal-ward.
But, moments into the second half, the Canaries were in front. Harry Brooke's free-kick was met by the head of Duffy who opened the scoring.
The lead was doubled moments later, as Gabe Forsyth's brilliant cross was met by Ogwuru who tapped in to make it 2-0.
Errol Mundle-Smith came close to adding more for Norwich, seeing efforts saved and blocked.
Welch's strike from distance whistled past the post, before Dereham pulled one back late on through Robbie Sweeney.
The Canaries would hold on and claim their spot in the next round of the Norfolk Hire Senior Cup.
