Norwich City Under-21s began their Premier League Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Exeter City on Wednesday evening.
Exeter had the game's first chance, with Jay Bird firing over in the early stages.
Errol Mundle-Smith created Norwich's first shot on goal as his effort was palmed away by the Exeter goalkeeper.
Finley Welch had the Canaries' best chance of the first half. After being found by Daniel Ogwuru, he cut inside but fired over.
Amari Richards almost opened the scoring for the Grecians just before the break, with Caleb Ansen saving well.
Exeter took the lead seven minutes into the second half, with Jonathan Tomkinson diverting a cross into his own net.
The Grecians almost doubled their lead moments later, as a corner routine saw Richards force Ansen into another smart stop.
Summer signings Brandon Forbes, AJ Bridge and Billy Gee were all introduced. Forbes almost claimed an assist as he threaded a pass through to Mundle-Smith, who rounded the goalkeeper before seeing an effort blocked.
Forbes, again, created another opportunity. The Scotsman found Welch on the edge of the box, with his effort being saved by the feet of the Exeter goalkeeper.
It would be the Forbes and Welch combination that resulted in the Norwich equaliser, as the Scotsman teed up Welch who made no mistake with his finish.
But there would be a late winner for Exeter, as Theo Cutler fired beyond Ansen as the Grecians claimed all three points in the PL Cup.
The Under-21s return to Premier League 2 action next Friday (September 20) as they travel away to Southampton.
