Women's Report | Southampton Academy 2-1 Norwich City

A stunning strike from Issy Moore wasn't enough to get a win for the Canaries against Southampton Academy Women, as they bowed out of the FAWNL Plate.

A stunning strike from Issy Moore wasn't enough to get a win for the Canaries against Southampton Academy Women, as they bowed out of the FAWNL Plate.

Andy Cook made just one change to the side that beat Leafield Athletic in the FA Cup last week, bringing Tamsin Medd-Gill into the starting 11 for Eloise Morran who is on international duty with Scotland Under-19s.

The City head coach also reintroduced Lauren Hailes to the squad after some time out on the sidelines with an injury.

After a disruptive start to the day with a change of venue and delayed kick-off time, the Canaries started the game lively and held their own against the PGA side.

Lauren Tomlinson made a brilliant run down the left side and managed a shot from the edge of the area, but her effort was smothered by Jasmine Lampard in goal.

The hosts then began to take control and had a flurry of chances to find an opener, coming closest from a header that rolled just wide of the target.

A fairly even first half closed with an effort from Megan Todd, back in the starting 11 for the second week running following injury, and a brilliant track-back from Ceri Flye to keep it goalless at the break.

The second half opened with lots of action for Sarah Quantrill, who had to be alert to a hungry Southampton attack.

It was City though who found the opener, in fantastic fashion from Moore, who kept a dangerous attack alive with three keepy-ups and a volley that looped over Lampard and found the back of the net.

The hosts responded immediately, however, finding an equaliser through Anya Lucas six minutes later.

The rest of the game was played out cautiously for both sides until the final minute of normal time, when captain Kaylee Buckingham poked in the winner.

The loss sees the Canaries exit the Plate competition at the quarter-final stage.
