Philippe Clement’s side will be looking to turn Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup success into their first Sky Bet Championship points of the season when Burnley visit Carrow Road on Saturday.
The Canaries booked their place in the third round with a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City in the Welsh capital, with Mathias Kvistgaarden opening the scoring before returning striker Ante Crnac doubled the advantage. Yousef Salech’s late goal made for a nervy finish, but City held on to secure a trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the next round.
After defeats to West Brom and Millwall in their opening two league fixtures, Clement’s side will be hoping to get their Championship campaign up and running against recently relegated Burnley, with kick-off at Carrow Road on Saturday, August 29 (3pm KO).
Tickets remain on sale and can be purchased here.
The Opposition
Nicky Hayen’s side also arrive at Carrow Road in search of their first league win of the season, having drawn their opener against West Ham before surrendering a first-half lead in a 3-1 defeat to West Brom at The Hawthorns last weekend.
The Belgian, who arrived at Burnley in July, is one of just three managers to have taken charge of both Club Brugge and Genk, two of Belgium’s Pro League giants. In doing so, he joined City boss Philippe Clement and one other on the exclusive list of coaches to have managed both clubs.
Despite suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat to Bradford on Wednesday, the Clarets were boosted by the return of key man Zian Flemming, with the forward making his comeback after missing last weekend’s defeat in the West Country with a reported calf issue.
The former Millwall striker netted 11 goals in the top flight last season and, despite Burnley’s relegation, has been tipped to make a swift return to the Premier League, with a number of clubs reportedly vying for his signature.
Previous Encounters
The Canaries will be looking to end a run of four consecutive defeats against the Clarets, with their most recent meeting ending in a 2-1 loss in Lancashire in April 2025, as Burnley continued their push for an immediate return to the Premier League.
Goals from Hannibal Mejbri and Jaidon Anthony put the hosts two goals ahead before half-time. Jack Stacey pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining, but City were unable to find an equaliser as Burnley held on for all three points.
The Canaries’ last victory over the Clarets came in the latter stages of the 2021/22 Premier League season, when goals from Pierre Lees-Melou and Teemu Pukki, either side of the interval, secured a 2-0 win at Carrow Road. However, victory ultimately proved too little for either side, with both clubs relegated at the end of the campaign.
Connections
Three former Canaries could make the almost five-hour trip to East Anglia this weekend, with Ashley Barnes, Aaron Ramsey and Marcus Edwards all currently on Burnley’s books.
Barnes made 49 appearances in yellow and green between 2023 and 2025, scoring seven goals before returning to Burnley in January 2025.
Ramsey spent the first half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Carrow Road, making 20 appearances and scoring three goals before returning to Aston Villa. The midfielder subsequently joined Middlesbrough in January 2023.
Winger Marcus Edwards spent the latter stages of the 2017/18 season on loan with City from Tottenham Hotspur. Despite a career that has since taken him to the Portuguese top flight, Premier League, Champions League and Europa League, Edwards struggled to make an impact during his time in Norwich, featuring for just 10 minutes as a late substitute in a defeat to Fulham.
