Norwich City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Carrow Road as Marko Milovanović’s second-half penalty proved decisive.

Prior to kick-off, Carrow Road fell silent in tribute to Michael Wynn Jones before a minute’s applause to celebrate his life and legacy at Norwich City.

Club legends gathered on the pitch ahead of the tribute, with honorary life president Delia Smith also present as the applause rang around the stadium.

Philippe Clement made one change to the side that started on Wednesday night, with Jovon Makama replacing Mathias Kvistgaarden. Daniel Grimshaw started with Vladan Kovačević still sidelined through concussion, while Anthony Musaba missed out through illness.

The opening exchanges saw very little goalmouth action.

Norwich had their first attack in the 25th minute. Oscar Schwartau drove down the left and picked out Jacob Wright, who found Anis Ben Slimane, but the offside flag was raised as he released the ball towards goal.

The Canaries continued to test the Portsmouth defence, with Ruairi McConville going closest in the 38th minute when his effort from outside the box was gathered by Nicolas Schmid.

Neither side could break the deadlock before half-time, and the teams went into the interval goalless.

Clement made one change at half-time, introducing Darlin Yongwa in place of Ben Chrisene.

Four minutes into the second half, Jayden Meghoma was brought down inside the box and Portsmouth were awarded a penalty.

Milovanović stepped up and sent the ball into the bottom-left corner to give the visitors the lead.

City went in search for an equaliser.

Clement made a double substitution in the 56th minute, with Lucien Mahovo and Paris Maghoma replacing Andre Brooks and Slimane.

Mahovo made an immediate impact, finding Makama inside the box, but the forward sent his effort narrowly over the crossbar.

Jack Stacey was next to threaten in the 64th minute, striking from the right flank only to be denied by the Pompey stopper.

With 22 minutes remaining, Grimshaw had to be sharp off his line to make a vital tackle and deny Adrian Segečić adding a second for the visitors as the attacker raced through on goal.

Norwich came agonisingly close to an equaliser with just over ten minutes left. Mattsson struck low from outside the box with his effort looking destined to nestle in the far corner. The curl on the ball beat Schmid but the Dane could only watch as it cannoned off the inside of the far post.

Mattsson then found Mathias Kvistgaarden on the edge of the box. The substitute took a brilliant touch, turned and sent his effort inches wide of the near post.

The Canaries continued to push in the closing stages but were unable to find an equaliser.
