Norwich City maintained their unbeaten start to the National League Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over National League outfit Worthing, following a goalless draw after 90 minutes.
Elliot Myles and Luke Towler came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Canaries, while Vicente Reyes produced a number of impressive saves to keep the hosts at bay. With City converting all five of their penalties in the shoot-out, Olly Lee's side secured the additional point to remain within touching distance of Group B leaders West Ham.
Sitting joint top of Group B heading into the clash with Worthing, Lee made three changes to the Under-21 side that drew with Stoke City in their previous outing.
Goalkeeper Reyes returned between the sticks, having started the Canaries' National League Cup opener against Hornchurch last month, while Reuben Cooper and Toby Chilvers were also restored to the starting XI.
It was the young Canaries who made the brighter start, although neither side managed to seriously test the opposing goalkeeper during the opening exchanges. Chilvers came closest, seeing two efforts blocked by Harry Ransom on the edge of the area.
City's creativity continued to come down the left, where Myles caused problems for the National League side's defence. The winger came close to picking out Corke inside the area, but his cross narrowly evaded the striker.
Worthing created their first real opportunity after 24 minutes when a quick free-kick from Ricky Aguiar caught City's backline off guard, releasing Charlie Kendall inside the area. However, Reyes was alert to the danger and produced a fine save to deny the forward.
The hosts grew into the game as half-time approached, with Reyes producing another excellent save to thwart Jordan Young before Marquez saw his effort cleared off the line by Sonny Rowland.
The Canaries' best chance of the game came nine minutes after the restart when Finlay Corke found Cooper on the edge of the area, with the winger's effort acrobatically denied by Worthing's No.13.
City were beginning to assert themselves, with Myles the next to test the Worthing goalkeeper after beating two defenders inside the area before seeing his effort parried away.
Reyes produced his best save of the evening in the 67th minute. Substitute Madowski embarked on a dangerous solo run before City's stopper got down brilliantly to deny the hosts and keep the scores level.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough heading into the final quarter, Irish winger Luke Chukwu was introduced to add another dimension to City's attack, replacing Cooper.
Reece Wilkes was also introduced late on as the Canaries continued to push for a winner, but neither side could find the decisive touch before the final whistle.
With the points shared after 90 minutes, the additional point was decided by a penalty shoot-out.
City showed composure from the spot, converting all five of their penalties to secure a 5-4 shoot-out victory and maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.
The young Yellows are back in action on Friday night when they take on Birmingham City at the Avant Training Centre (7pm KO), with their next National League Cup outing coming on Tuesday, October 13, when they face Aldershot Town.
