Reaction | Clement: These are really important lessons

Philippe Clement

Head coach Philippe Clement reflected on Wednesday evening's goalless draw on the road against Wimbledon, saying the match was a big lesson for a lot of his players.

"I think everybody who saw the game will be surprised that it was 0-0, because we had really, really big chances and we should finish up the job, but we didn't.

"Those are steps to make.

"I know also that I brought the players into this game tired; that's also the idea of a training camp; so that will be one part of the story.

"But we need to raise levels in our finishing, for sure.

"When you get those kind of opportunities, you take them.

"For Jake (Glossop), it's the first time that he's played with us and to see Botan (Ameen), to see Zach (Baumann) again is great; they got a lot of minutes today.

"These are really important lessons for them and really important experiences, but in general, this week is about getting a really big load in the legs of the players, so that's why I made lots of rotations between this game and then the game on Saturday.

"This will be the toughest week in terms of metrics for all of pre season."

There were some notable absences in the travelling squad, including Kellen Fisher, Andre Brooks and Jovon Makama.

"(Kellen) Fisher twisted his ankle landing yesterday after a jump on a foot of a teammate.

"It was swollen today, so he was not able to play and we're going see how he is the next couple of days.

"Andre (Brooks) was planned that he would not play today, because we need to build up his load after the injury that he has had

"Jovon (Makama) got a kick like I said against Colchester and he's still struggling with that, so that's the reason he was not here."

Three of the five players who featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup returned to training earlier this week, with Kenny McLean, José Córdoba and Anis Ben Slimane all reunited with the squad.

"It's really good to have them back, they had a good brea but they're really hungry to come back.

"We didn't want to put them directly in a game now because they just started training on Monday.

"They had Monday in training, the double session of yesterday, today also a double session, so we want to build up the load."

On the how the rest of the week would look for his team, Clement said: "Tomorrow, for the guys who played more minutes, will be more recovery.

"The others will train a bit more, the international group will train much more and then in the afternoon, we have a team activity with everybody.

"In the evening, it will be individual talks again, so it's still a busy schedule."
