Reaction | Grimshaw: "We have to stick together and keep working"

Daniel Grimshaw

Daniel Grimshaw admitted Norwich City were left "very deflated" after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth, but insisted the squad must remain united and keep working to turn their season around.

The Canaries were beaten at Carrow Road and Grimshaw acknowledged the disappointment felt throughout the dressing room, while stressing that the players must draw on the experience of last season's difficult spell to find a way forward.

"Very deflated," he said.

"Going into it, we wanted to get our season started again and it's not worked out that way, but we know we've got to keep going. That's the only way to get out of it.

"We found ourselves in this position last season and we managed to get out of that, so let's start doing that now."

Grimshaw believes confidence has naturally been affected by a run of disappointing results, but remains convinced a positive result can help change the team's fortunes.

"I think with a young group, confidence is low at the minute with the results we've been having and we've just got to find a way to get out of this.

"I think once one win comes then we can see our season change around."

The goalkeeper admitted Norwich are experiencing a challenging period at both ends of the pitch, but says there is confidence within the squad that improvements will come through hard work on the training ground.

"As a team, we're in a tough moment. We're obviously going through a stage of not scoring a lot and conceding a lot, but I'm sure we'll find ideas and we'll get working as a team and we'll try and get back on track."

Reflecting on the lessons learned from a similar situation last season, Grimshaw pointed to the importance of maintaining belief and continuing to work towards a clear way of playing.

"Obviously, the new gaffer came in and then with him we worked and we worked and we always had ideas of how we were going to play and break teams down.

"At the moment it's just not clicking, but I'm sure it will turn around.

"I think everyone's in there as hungry and everyone knows the work we've got to do and that's what we're all trying to do every day."

The City stopper rejected any suggestion of complacency within the squad and says everyone associated with the club is determined to restore the positive momentum that made Carrow Road such a difficult place for opponents last season.

"I won't say it's any complacency. I just think at the moment it's not going the way we want.

"As a whole club, us as players, staff and the fans as well, we need to get back to where we were last year and we need to start working on that."

Grimshaw also spoke about the reaction from supporters at full-time, admitting the players are eager to recreate the connection between team and fans that proved so important last season.

"It's never nice as a player to hear the boos after, so we don't want that here.

"Last year it was such a hard place for teams to come when we got going and that's what we need to create again.

"We've seen how special the atmosphere was here last season and that's what us as players need to decide, when we're going to turn that around. Once we do that, we know the fans will be with us."

Looking ahead, Grimshaw says responsibility rests firmly with the players and staff to change the current mood and get Norwich moving in the right direction once again.

"We can't let this feeling go on for too long because we need to change it around.

"It's only us players and staff who can do that together, and no one else."
