Supporters invited to join stem cell donor register

Norwich City fan David Nichols and Tobi at Carrow Road

Supporters will have the chance to join the stem cell donor register outside the Barclay stand this weekend ahead of Norwich City's home fixture against Portsmouth.

Canaries fan, David Nichols, will join the Community Sports Foundation and DKMS on the day to share his story and raise awareness of stem cell donation.

Fans will be able to register as potential stem cell donors on the spot, helping to give more people the chance of finding a life-saving match.

DKMS is a charity committed to helping patients with blood cancer or blood related disorders, providing second chances at life to those in need of a transplant and raising funds to cover donor registration costs.

Each patient who needs a stem cell transplant requires a genetic ‘match’ with a potential donor, but only around one in three people find a match within their family.

David, who was previously involved with the New York Canaries supporters’ group in the United States, moved back to Norfolk in 2022.

Whilst living in New York, he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoblastic lymphoma and underwent a stem cell transplant as part of his treatment in 2020. Since then, he has been passionate about raising awareness of blood cancer.

Earlier this year, he was finally able to track down his donor, Tobi, and they will both be outside the Barclay stand on Saturday to share their story and encourage others to join the register.

Since their match, the pair have developed a close friendship, even visiting each other at their beloved football grounds.

Born in Germany, Tobi invited David to watch Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. This weekend, David will return the favour by welcoming Tobi to Carrow Road to watch the Canaries in action.

Supporters who are unable to take part on Saturday can find David at The Forum on Tuesday, October 20 from 11am to 6pm.

Alternatively, anyone can register online here.
