Norwich City Under-21s held on to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory over Derby County, with Finlay Corke’s late winner capping a dramatic encounter at Pride Park.
After taking a three-goal lead into the break, the young Canaries were pegged back by a second-half fightback from the hosts before Corke struck in the closing stages to ensure Olly Lee’s side left with all three points.
Olly Lee made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Bristol City in the Premier League Cup on Wednesday, with Caleb Ansen returning between the sticks to make his second Under-21s appearance of the season. Alan Domeracki and Botan Ameen also returned to the starting XI.
The Canaries had looked in control at half-time after a blistering spell saw them score three times in six minutes. Luke Towler opened the scoring in the 34th minute, finishing into the bottom corner after being played through by Reuben Cooper.
Just two minutes later, Cooper doubled the advantage, converting Botan Ameen’s cutback following a swift counter-attack. Jake Glossop then made it three in the 40th minute, firing into the top-right corner after Alan Domeracki’s delivery from a corner.
Derby made four changes at the interval and emerged with renewed purpose, with Adisa Osayande heading against the crossbar shortly after the restart.
The hosts soon found a way back into the contest, with Osayande heading home Charlie Smith’s cross in the 59th minute before Raymond Offor reduced the deficit further five minutes later, nodding in from a corner.
With the momentum firmly with Derby, the hosts completed their comeback in the 81st minute as Smith finished into the bottom-right corner to bring the scores level.
However, the Canaries responded in emphatic fashion. With three minutes of normal time remaining, Corke restored Norwich’s lead, latching on to Toby Chilvers’ pass before firing into the top-right corner to settle a seven-goal thriller.
Derby pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages, but Norwich saw out the remaining minutes to claim a hard-fought victory.
The result lifts the Canaries up to fourth in PL2, having won four of their opening six games this season. Olly Lee's side are back in action on Monday evening when they take on Braintree Town in the National League Cup.
