An electric first-half display helped Norwich City Under-21s secure all three Premier League 2 points as they defeated Birmingham City Under-21s 4-2 at the Avant Training Centre.
Goals from Toby Chilvers, Luke Towler and Gabriel Forsyth, alongside an own goal from Birmingham defender Riquelme Thompson-Jones, put the Canaries in complete control at the break. The visitors responded with two second-half goals from Menzi Mazwi, but Norwich's early advantage ultimately proved decisive.
The first opportunity arrived after just two minutes when Finlay Corke threaded a pass into the path of Errol Mundle-Smith. The forward shifted onto his right foot inside the penalty area but curled his effort over the crossbar.
Norwich continued to probe and nearly found a breakthrough after 15 minutes. Alan Domeracki carried the ball confidently through the centre of the pitch before dragging a strike from outside the box wide of the right-hand post.
Birmingham's biggest threat in the early stages came through Salif Bamba. The visitors' first sight of goal arrived after 21 minutes when the winger created space for himself on the right side of the area before firing a low effort straight at Vicente Reyes.
Just a minute later, City made their pressure count. Gabriel Forsyth's inswinging corner from the right caused problems inside the six-yard box and was ultimately turned into his own net by Thompson-Jones under the crossbar.
The opener sparked Norwich into life and they doubled their advantage shortly afterwards. A clever flick from Corke split the Birmingham defence, allowing Chilvers to race through on goal and finish confidently beyond Tyrese Warmington.
There was no respite for the visitors as Norwich struck again moments later. Mundle-Smith's cutback broke for Towler on the edge of the area and he swept a low finish into the corner to make it 3-0.
The Canaries then rounded off a devastating first-half spell with a fourth goal from the penalty spot. Forsyth stepped up and confidently dispatched his effort high into the corner, leaving Warmington with no chance.
Birmingham nearly found a route back into the contest before the interval when a neat move down the left created an opening for Mazwi, but Reyes reacted well to push the shot behind.
Elliot Myles was introduced at half-time in place of Mundle-Smith, and Norwich almost added a fifth five minutes after the restart. Forsyth's deep free-kick from the left was met powerfully by Bruno Alves, whose looping header crashed against the crossbar.
Birmingham began to grow into the game and came close when Finn McGreevy reached the byline and cut the ball back for Bamba, but Reyes produced an excellent save with an outstretched left foot to deny the forward from close range.
The visitors eventually reduced the deficit on 59 minutes. A sharp passing move around the edge of the penalty area opened up Norwich's defence and Mazwi applied a composed low finish beyond Reyes.
Norwich responded positively and almost restored their four-goal cushion through a move involving all three second-half substitutes. Reuben Cooper released Myles down the right and his first-time cross perfectly found Luke Chukwu, whose first-time effort sailed over the bar.
Myles continued to be involved and combined neatly with Corke in a flowing move across the pitch before finding space in the penalty area, only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Warmington.
Cooper was making a major impact after his introduction and, after 65 minutes, produced an excellent run from inside his own half. After nutmegging his marker and driving forward, he fed the ball into Chukwu, who cut inside and bent a strike inches wide of the far post, with many in the crowd believing it had found the net.
Bamba remained a constant threat for Birmingham and nearly created another goal with 15 minutes remaining. The winger burst into the box down the left flank before driving a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no blue shirt was on hand to convert.
Blues came close once more through Alezandro Da Silva, who reacted late to a driven delivery that struck his thigh inside the area. The effort lacked the momentum needed to beat Reyes and the Canaries were able to clear.
With five minutes remaining, Cooper again went close to capping an impressive cameo appearance. The midfielder drove across the edge of the box before unleashing a left-footed strike that was brilliantly clawed away by Warmington.
Birmingham did find a second goal deep into stoppage time when Mazwi produced a superb free-kick from 25 yards. Reyes managed to get a hand to the effort, but the placement of the strike proved too precise to keep out.
Despite the late consolation, Norwich's outstanding first-half display had already laid the foundations for victory, ensuring the Canaries claimed all three points and continued their strong Premier League 2 campaign.
