Under-21s Report | Southampton 5-2 Norwich City

Corke

Norwich City Under-21s suffered a 5-2 defeat against Southampton in Premier League 2, despite taking an early lead through Reuben Cooper and finding the net again late on through Finlay Corke.

Olly Lee made four changes to the side that lost to Braintree Town on Tuesday, with Vinnie Leonard handed his first start since joining from Dundalk in the summer. Jake Glossop, Cooper and Botan Ameen also came into the starting XI.

The Canaries made a positive start and went ahead after 14 minutes when Cooper found the top-right corner with a left-footed finish from the right of the area, following good work from Ameen.

Southampton responded with a spell of pressure, with Harry Derbyshire-Came called into action to deny Princewill Ehibhatiomhan twice in quick succession. The Norwich goalkeeper also watched Wyatt Comley's effort fly over before making another save to keep out Harry Gathercole's attempt.

The hosts eventually drew level on 29 minutes, with Ehibhatiomhan finishing from the centre of the box after being picked out by Gathercole.

Norwich looked to regain their advantage, with Elliot Myles firing over from distance, but Southampton took the lead for the first time in the 37th minute. Aston Daley found the bottom-right corner after being set up by Ehibhatiomhan.

Vincent Leonard tested Dylan Moody with a long-range effort in the closing stages, but Southampton struck again just before the break. A swift counter-attack ended with Sufianu Sillah Dibaga finding the bottom corner to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage at half-time.

The hosts picked up where they left off after the restart, with Dibaga scoring his second of the evening five minutes into the second half, finishing another fast break to extend Southampton's lead.

Norwich looked for a response, with Botan Ameen and Finlay Oligbo both going close before Luke Towler tested Moody from distance. The Southampton goalkeeper also denied Myles as the Canaries continued to search for a way back into the contest.

Lee made a series of changes, introducing Takudzwa Gwanzura and Vatan Özcan before Toby Chilvers and Zachary Baumann also entered the action.

The Canaries' pressure eventually paid off in the 81st minute when Corke pulled one back, finishing from close range after being played through by Jake Glossop on the counter-attack.

Towler then forced another save from Moody, while Özcan came agonisingly close to adding a third, striking the post with a long-range effort following a corner.

However, Southampton sealed the points in stoppage time as Ehibhatiomhan broke forward to score his second of the evening, finding the bottom corner to complete a 5-2 victory.
