Norwich City Under-21s suffered their first defeat of the Premier League 2 season on Friday evening, falling to a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland.
Jocelin Ta Bi and Tom Proctor put the hosts two goals ahead before Luke Towler halved the deficit with the final kick of the first half.
Towler was later shown a second yellow card midway through the second half, leaving the Canaries with ten men, before Jenson Jones restored Sunderland's two-goal advantage ten minutes from time to seal the points for the Black Cats.
Olly Lee made five changes to the side that beat Birmingham City 4-2 last Friday, with Rio Mundle, Sonny Rowland, Elliot Myles and Luke Chukwu all restored to the starting XI, while Luis Lines made his first start of the season in goal.
The Canaries made a positive start and arguably enjoyed the better of the early chances, with Myles going closest after just two minutes when he dragged an effort wide from range. However, it was Sunderland who broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.
Gabriel Forsyth was adjudged to have brought down Jaydon Jones inside the area, allowing Jocelin Ta Bi to step up and make no mistake, firing into the corner beyond the reach of Lines, who had dived the right way.
The opener shifted the momentum firmly in the hosts' favour, with Sunderland continuing to apply pressure as they looked to double their advantage.
Their persistence eventually paid off after half an hour, following an impressive passage of play which culminated in Ta Bi pulling the ball back to Tom Proctor, whose effort took a deflection before finding the net.
Ta Bi remained a constant threat down the Canaries' left and almost helped Sunderland add a third as the opening 45 minutes drew to a close. The winger beat two defenders before pulling the ball back to Joan Angulo, who couldn't keep his effort down.
Despite being on the back foot for much of the half, the Canaries were handed a crucial lifeline in the final act before the break. Forsyth's cross caused problems inside the Sunderland area, with Towler reacting quickest to fire home from close range and halve the deficit heading into half-time.
Lee's side began the second half with renewed intensity, despite a change in goal at the interval which saw Vicente Reyes introduced.
Myles was at the heart of City's bright start, neatly beating two Sunderland defenders before stinging the palms of Cowen in the hosts' goal. Moments later, Towler whipped a dangerous low cross into the area, but it evaded everyone in a yellow shirt.
Domeracki saw an effort from range fly narrowly wide before the Canaries were reduced to ten men, with goalscorer Towler shown a second yellow card following a late challenge on Proctor.
The dismissal prompted a triple change from Lee, with Toby Chilvers, Reuben Cooper and Zach Baumann introduced as City looked to find a way back into the game.
Despite being down to ten, the Yellows continued to push for an equaliser. Newly introduced Chilvers was found in space on the edge of the area, but the midfielder could only fire straight at the Sunderland goalkeeper.
The hosts eventually restored their two-goal advantage with seven minutes remaining. Jenson Jones found Jayden Jones on the edge of the area, with the forward cutting inside before firing into the bottom corner to seal all three points for the Black Cats.
