Norwich City Women celebrate Lauren Hailes' goal

Norwich City Women came from behind to defeat Cambridge United Women 2-1 at The Nest on Tuesday evening in the first FAWNL Cup group stage tie.

United initially went in front early on through Mollie Coupar but Issy Moore netted the equaliser in injury time of the first half.

City then found the winner through Lauren Hailes with 20 minutes left to play.

Perry Northeast made seven changes to the side that beat Hull City just 48 hours ago, with only Eva-Jean Young, Evie Williams, Freya Symonds and Moore remaining in the starting 11.

After a nervy start for both side, the Canaries had the first chance of the evening.

A brilliant ball through the middle from Drew Wilson found Moore waiting in the area, who found the target but was denied by Lauren Webb in goal.

Moore was then denied again at point-blank range by Webb after a great ball in by Symonds.

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock however, as Coupar slid United's first shot at goal into the bottom corner to take the lead after 15 minutes.

There was then an extended break in play following a serious injury to former Canary Ceri Flye.

Once the centre-back was stretchered off to safety, Sienna Booty and Lauren Hailes both had efforts fired at goal but neither could find the target.

Moore was denied for a third time shortly before the break after a fantastic dribble from Symonds to drive an attack into the box.

City were then in front for the first time that evening, thanks to some brilliant strength on the ball from Elliana Martin who found Niyah Dunbar in the box.

The forward flicked on a simple ball to Hailes, who only had to tap home for the Canaries' second.

Northeast's side had the chance to extend their league when the ball fell to Grace Riglar in open space who unselfishly found Kennard down the left.

The winger took a chance to shoot and rattled the woodwork with her effort for the final chance of the tie.

The Canaries took all three points in the first of their three FAWNL Cup group games, with a trip Luton Town on the cards for the next.
