Norwich City Women celebrate scoring against Peterborough United

Norwich City Women confirmed their place in the next round of the FAWNL League Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win over Peterborough United at The Nest on Sunday.

Three goals in five minutes before the break from Issy Moore, Poppy Groves and Elliana Martin put the Canaries firmly in control, before Lara Densley added a fourth deep into the second half.

There were two changes to the side that took a point away from Peterborough United during the week, as Poppy Irvine replaced Eva-Jean Young between the sticks and Martin started up top over Faith Harrison.

Some excellent high pressing from Moore and Martin allowed Emily Wallace to steal the ball deep in Peterborough's half and found Groves to fire on target but only into the hands of Neive Corry.

City stopper Irvine was alert to a dangerous strike from the visitors inside 15 minutes, getting low to parry behind for a corner and then calmly collecting the resulting set-piece.

Symonds delivered a free-kick into the area that evaded the heads of United's outfield shirts but fell straight into the path of Corry.

Irvine made another important save down the other end shortly after, denying Kira Rai from a tight angle inside the area.

The visitors had a chance late in the first half through Kayleigh Hines, who hovered over a free-kick that she sent in with some power but was unable to find the target.

Norwich then eventually broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute after Kennard excellently held up play on the edge of the area and slotted the ball across to Moore, who only had to backheel the ball over the line for the lead.

They doubled their advantage just two minutes later as Martin pressed excellently to win a throw-in. It was taken quickly and the forward managed a shot on target but was blocked by Corry, before Groves pounced on the rebound and fired home.

City weren't finished there though, as more fantastic pressing from Martin allowed her to steal the ball on the line from the Posh stopper and tap home a third in injury time of the first half.

The hosts remained in control as the second half kicked-off and Martin continued to cause problems at the back for Posh.

Half-time substitute Evie Driscoll had the next shot at goal only for Irvine to calmly snatch away from danger.

The fresh legs of Niyah Dunbar and Lauren Hailes both had the ball in the back of the net each but were flagged for offside and a foul.

City added a fourth with three minutes left on the clock as Lara Densley finished confidently from close range, turning home Dunbar’s pinpoint cross following an excellent surging run down the left flank.

The win secures a place in the second round of the competition for the Canaries, with the draw taking place on FAWNL channels on Wednesday.
