Women's Report | Norwich City 5-2 Redditch Borough (FA Cup)

Issy Moore and Sienna Booty celebrate

Norwich City Women came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at The Nest on Sunday afternoon, beating Redditch Borough 5-2 in the first round of the Women's FA Cup.

Grace Riglar opened the scoring early on and after City were pegged back by a wonder-strike from the visitors, Faith Harrison restored the Canaries' lead.

Second half goals came from Sienna Booty and Issy Moore, twice.

Only four Yellows players retained their place who started in last weekend's defeat against West Brom; Riglar, Eloise King, Poppy Groves and Holly Kennard.

Poppy Irvine started between the sticks with Poppy Francis and Millie Daviss in as full-backs, joined by Riglar and Evie Williams at centre-back.

Groves, King and Sienna Booty made up the midfield with Kennard, Harrison and Lara Densley up front.

Williams, who had earned her first start since returning from injury, fired a free-kick goalwards inside 10 minutes for the first shot of the afternoon but her strike flew inches over the bar.

Booty then struck next as she battled in midifield to hold onto possession and was set up by Daviss to shoot from the edge of the area, forcing Abby Dadson to parry behind for a corner.

The resulting set-piece eventually fell to Riglar in the box, who headed home the opener on 17 minutes.

The lead was short lived, however, as the visitor's Daisy-Mae Clements noticed Irvine marginally off her line and sent in a long-range strike that found the top corner to bring the scores level again just two minutes later.

Kennard then combined well with Francis down the left to send the winger through on goal, but her strike was smothered by Dadson.

The Canaries' lead was restored 10 minutes later as Harrison broke free on her own deep in Redditch Borough's half, rounding the visitors' stopper and firing into an empty net.

Dadson then denied Booty again with less than five minutes before the break as she sent in a looping strike that forced the visitor's goalkeeper into action, punching away the effort.

After Densley initially mistimed her footing to poke hom a third, she cut the ball back to Eloise King in the area who just couldn't find the target.

As the second half commenced, it took just 10 minutes for the visitors to find another equaliser, as a short backpass to Irvine was just out of reach and allowed Jessica Hood to tap home for the Tier 5 side.

The visitors had found their stride, pushing for another goal and forcing Irvine into a fingertip save to keep the scores level one minute later.

City responded immediately to the set-back as Harrison was released down the right wing and crossed into the box for Booty, whose first-time strike drilled into the back of the net.

A scramble in the Borough area meant City could then extend their lead to four as Issy Moore tapped home with 10 minutes to play, having been on the pitch all of nine minutes.

She then netted her second after stealing the ball deep in the visitor's half and sending a low shot goalwards to roll into the back of the net.

The win means City enter the next round of the competition, due to take place on Sunday, November 15.
